India’s rich and diverse culture holds the thread to its unity. India’s various art forms which evolved over thousands of years are not only a reflection of the diverse culture of this land but also a source of spiritual inspiration. They have enriched this nation for thousands of years but are quickly becoming a forgotten dimension of our life.

In an endeavor to preserve and promote the uniqueness, purity and diversity of the country’s performing arts, Isha Foundation annually hosts Yaksha, a 7-day feast of music and dance, amidst the sacred space of the Dhyanalinga Yogic Temple located at the verdant foothills of the Velliangiri Mountains. The name of the festival is inspired by Yakshas – celestial beings in Indian mythology. Yaksha provides a common platform for the artistes to perform and connoisseurs to see and appreciate these ancient arts performed by masters as well as novices. These performances will be conducted against the backdrop of the Linga Bhairavi and the Dhyanalinga Temple at the Isha Yoga Center. Artistic presentations, in their subtlety and vibrancy, evoke the profoundness and depth inherent in India’s ancient culture and provide an opportunity for people from across the world to discover and experience the beauty of these art forms.

This spectacular and colorful cultural event will be celebrated between 13th and 19th February, 2012, and will feature 7 consecutive nights of musical concerts and dance by some of the greatest artistes in India. Each day is an exquisite blend of cultural and contemporary arts and showcases a dazzling array of vocalists from the Carnatic and Hindustani styles; instrumentalists including Flute, Tabla, and Sarod; exponents of classical dance such as Bharatanatyam; as well as folk artistes from all around the world. The 2012 Yaksha celebrations will feature sarod player Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan Amjad Ali Khan, violinist Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan L. Subramaniam, Bharatanatyam dancer Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Alarmel Valli, Carnatic musician Ravi Kiran, and noted Indian classical vocalists Neyveli Santhanagopalan, National Film Awardee Padma Shri Shubha Mudgal and Padma Bhushan Channulal Mishra.
