Alarmel Valli
in considered a paragon of the Pandanallur style of the Indian classical dance form Bharatnatyam, and has been widely lauded for her distinctive style of Indian classical dance and choreography. In 1991, the Government of India awarded her the Padmasri, making her the youngest dancer ever to receive this award. She is also the recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2001, and the Padma Bhushan in 2004.

She has been featured in numerous documentaries on dance, for example in the ‘Spirit of Asia’ series produced by the BBC, in documentaries produced by the Nederlands Broadcasting Company, the Japanese National Television, and the Films Division of India. Alarmel is also the founder of Dipashikha, a centre for fine arts in Chennai where she teaches Bharatnatyam.
